I’ve experienced a few scams, the one that stood out most to me was getting a text claiming to be my bank saying I was $1,000 in debt and would need to pay it immediately. This an example of false bank charges, this is a technique scammers use.

The scam is used to cause people to try and pay their “debt” or appeal to it out of fear or stress. It is created to seem official, and trick people into paying by using details and information on people’s banking. The scammers request personal information, like credit card details or even information vital to your identity. Once obtained, the scammers use this information to steal money and transfer it from the victims account and even in extreme cases steal the identity.

Major red flags in this situation is receiving a text with a link, rather than a bill in the mail, or even a phone call. The texts also lack your name, they don’t have all of your information and are trying to get the information by you hitting the link. Large amount of money that you don’t recall spending is a red flag as well, you can also check you bank account to verify your funds. Lack of proper grammar, and punctuation stands out since most proper businesses that are reaching out on serious means usually have proper grammar and punctuation since they’re a professional representing a company. Check for unrealistic promises, or problems relating to bank accounts, car insurance, etc.
